Hybrid Inverter

A hybrid inverter combines a solar inverter and a battery inverter in one unit, managing power flow between your solar panels, battery storage, home, and the grid.

Hybrid Inverter explained

A hybrid inverter (also called a battery-ready or storage-ready inverter) is an all-in-one device that handles both solar generation and battery storage in a single unit. It manages the flow of electricity between four sources: your solar panels, battery, home, and the grid.

How it works:

  • During the day: solar power charges your battery and/or powers your home directly
  • When solar exceeds demand: excess power charges the battery, then exports to the grid
  • In the evening: the battery discharges to power your home
  • If battery is depleted: the grid supplies any remaining demand

Popular hybrid inverters include GivEnergy, SolarEdge, Sungrow, Solax, and GoodWe. Most support lithium-ion battery systems from BYD, Tesla Powerwall, or the manufacturer's own batteries.

Key advantages over a separate solar inverter + AC-coupled battery:

  • More efficient (DC-coupled charging avoids one conversion step)
  • Neater installation with one device
  • Often cheaper than separate components
  • Better backup power capability during grid outages

If you're planning to add a battery now or in the future, a hybrid inverter is usually the most cost-effective approach. If you're adding storage to an existing solar system, an AC-coupled battery (like a Tesla Powerwall) may be more practical.

How this affects your solar decision

A hybrid inverter is the most efficient way to combine solar and battery storage — and can affect whether a battery is worth adding. Use the Solar Battery Calculator to model your savings with a battery system.
