What Drives Solar Installation Costs?

The total cost of a solar installation depends on the system size (in kW), your country's average cost per kilowatt installed, any additional components like battery storage or optimisers, and installation complexity. Costs per kW tend to decrease as system size increases, because fixed costs like scaffolding and electrical work are spread over more panels. This calculator uses average installed costs per kW for your country, which include panels, inverter, mounting, and standard installation.

How We Estimate Your Installation Cost

We first calculate the system size your home needs based on your electricity consumption. Then we apply country-specific cost ranges per kilowatt installed. These ranges reflect current market averages including equipment and labour. The low end represents competitive quotes in areas with mature solar markets; the high end accounts for more complex installations or premium equipment. Battery costs are calculated separately if selected.

Solar Costs by Country: What to Expect

Solar installation costs vary considerably by country. In Australia, strong competition and government incentives keep costs low at roughly A$1,000–1,600 per kW. In the US, costs range from $2,400–3,200 per kW — the federal ITC expired at end of 2025, so no federal credit applies in 2026. The UK sits around £1,500–2,200 per kW with 0% VAT on residential installations. Canada ranges from C$2,600–3,400 per kW with provincial incentives available. Ireland is around €1,600–2,400 per kW with SEAI grants up to €1,800 available. New Zealand is NZ$1,800–2,600 per kW. These figures include standard installation but not battery storage.
